I would very much appreciate it if some direction on how to play Sleepyhead would be posted. Alternate tuning? Capo?

Thanks!

Percy 9-2-2010 03:36 AM
Brad definitely uses an open tuning and god only knows what that picking pattern is!

not much help I know-

when I play it I play a G chord with my forefinger on the 2nd fret of the G string(A) and my ring finger on the 3rd fret fo the B string (D) and hammer the the G string wih my pinky on the 4rth fret (B). My middle finger fretting the G on the low E string (3rd fret)

so its pluck the low G and the A together hammering on the B and then ringing the D.

Now if that makes any sense I'd be surprised! I tried tho.

percy

Zachary 9-5-2010 08:24 PM
It makes perfect sense. Do you switch over to a C chord shape when you finish off the that phrase?

And thanks again!

percy 9-5-2010 11:27 PM
yeah there's a C in there- "and there I (c) rose from sleep..."

C D
Rise and shine sleepy head
C G
up and at em outa bed
D
the day is anew
C
and love's been looking for you
G
rub your eyes you got something to do
D
you're a miracle boy.

request: lyrics/chords to 82nd Avenue.

p.s., i love you, Percy.

Percy 9-2-2010 03:27 AM
i luv u 2!

Almost all gone
racing to the end
strange wide and frightened smile
over's my only friend
9:30 knock on the door
housekeeping? sure, more towels
and tell me again
how your momma met your daddy
at the Rambling Inn

I'm sketching 82nd Avenue,
Rod Stewart just walked by circa 1982.
I wonder what the shady ladies really do.

Children on the playground
now that sound, that sound
is the same world round
her dreams are the same as mine
but she'll stay when I leave this town
the bartender sings along
with the jukebox, whatever's on
and the morning man who wack the weeds
he's only spreading seeds

I'm sketching 82nd Avenue,
morning junkies, how do ya do?
time's an old man chalking his cue.

And with the sinking sun
the drowning comes
like a flood
the night swims through the day
blowhole moon, Jonah's whale
got to get away, got to get away,
got to get away, got to get away...

I'm sketching 82nd Avenue,
where the good times won't find you.
Still wonder what the shady ladies really do.

i see
that there is no me
haven't you heard?
there's no eye but the third

i hear
nothing to fear
the words that were said
were before we were dead

i smell
that all is well
haven't you tasted
how life's being wasted?

i taste
the world without haste
haven't you found
the nothing around?

i feel
how nothing is real
haven't you felt
that we're all gonna melt?

-------------

the desire to get better
is itself the pain

the desire to get drier
is itself the rain

the hotter the fire
the wetter the snow-
man trying to hold on
to a love that will let go

Well Percy, seeing as how you inspire me to write, I thought I'd post these words here, hoping somehow they will be awesome by association. Thank you for being you!

Answering questions before the questions arrive
What kind of questions are those, anyway?
Leading myself down a long, dusty road
Too proud to carry on, too lonesome to stay

I took the shortest path to the top of the pass
The sunrise surprised, just the same
To dance on the mountain, bitter wind, looking glass
A picture that can't be contained in a frame

CHORUS
I know, I know,
I know there is no other way
I know, I know,
If I didn't have to go, I surely would stay

I looked for myself over my own shoulder
What happened back there, anyway?
Not sure I succeeded, not sure that I failed
Not sure how I got tangled up in the fray

I binged and I purged, I followed an urge
I called it a plan, just the same
People saw me leave, but they didn't understand
When I pulled up the stakes, I was staking my claim

CHORUS
I know, I know
I know there is no other way
I know, I know
If I didn't have to go, I surely would stay

I've heard it said that the choices we've made
Lead us to right where we are today
Well, today I choose to make my grande finale
Tomorrow, a rainbow, never fading to gray

I've seen the universe through the eyes of a smile
Managed to smile myself, just the same
Everybody 'round here looking to win
But nobody really understanding the game

CHORUS
I know, I know
I know there is no other way
I know, I know
If I didn't have to go, I surely would stay
If I didn't have to go, surely I'd stay

i've forgotten how to relax
how to take it slow
how to just let everything go
and i miss it so

i feel like i got Ferris in there making his wheels
and juliet taking her
taking her pills
and a thousand more

deep breaths, deep breaths

there's a man anxiously tapping his foot
can't stand waiting saying
boy you better hurry up
i can't get away

i try to sit alone in the dark
but i'm not,
do you believe in ghosts?
that come and go
like

deep breaths, deep breaths

i'm sitting in a smoky bar
she's ugly
and full of despair...
breath of fresh air

inside me there's an earthquake,
a home on the moon
an out of tune choir
telling me to take

deep breaths, deep breaths

mags 12-6-2009 09:08 AM
ahhh percy,
you've kept me up,
taking deep breaths..

is this one in your player?

here's the result of a writing assignment given to me by Big Light...........

dear sir, thank you for your questions-
I will try not to answer them in haste.

my time on earth will not be remembered,
it passes quiet, like a thief, not chased

But let's not say the same for my passing
like a wind full of caution and kites!

I just may thank you for asking
at the end of a million more nights.

No, time is too busy with the breadcrumbs
to spend itself following me.

It's only by chance, by hunger it comes
it's not swallowing me!

I'm looking for God in a corner
so if it comes it can't get too far

In my shades I read the paper
Lord Byron was a rock star

and I hate being told that I'm great
for I can never do as I'm told

pushed by the early, pulled by the late
I just want to sit til I'm old.

and, no, I've never had much money
and if I could change something, that wouldn't be it.

and I like alone, so saying goodbye
tho sad, I celebrate a bit.

there's something timeless in us,
as we make our silly glorious plans!

and as for your last question-
A good friend understands.

Arthur O'Shaughnessy. 1844–1881

Ode

WE are the music-makers,
And we are the dreamers of dreams,
Wandering by lone sea-breakers,
And sitting by desolate streams;
World-losers and world-forsakers,
On whom the pale moon gleams:
Yet we are the movers and shakers
Of the world for ever, it seems.

With wonderful deathless ditties
We build up the world's great cities,
And out of a fabulous story
We fashion an empire's glory:
One man with a dream, at pleasure,
Shall go forth and conquer a crown;
And three with a new song's measure
Can trample an empire down.

We, in the ages lying
In the buried past of the earth,
Built Nineveh with our sighing,
And Babel itself with our mirth;
And o'erthrew them with prophesying
To the old of the new world's worth;
For each age is a dream that is dying,
Or one that is coming to birth.

Percy 11-21-2009 04:37 AM

my brilliant mind hovers above me
keeps looking down on the fool i've been
saying- man, that's freaking ugly
i want the world to see how beautiful i am

my brilliant mind knows what its doing
it must kill it to see me be so.... so
but time seems to be proving
there's something my brilliant mind doesn't know

my sweet heart it beats inside me
it's racing as I try to chase it down-
that's where love starts, where love is hiding,
where life is measured by the pound

my sweet heart, it never fears
it would never say a word that was untrue
my sweet heart cries blue tears
when I do some of the things I do

my gift from God, my call to freedom,
my step with grace, my destiny-
it's in their eyes each time I see them
they're wary of the rest of me

but when all the leaves have fallen
and Spring goes to sleep beneath the sea
these plain 'ol feet keep me from crawling
and these two hands are counting on me.

just like jack benny I'm 39
always will be 39
as a child and my teens and my twenties were fine
but all my thirties felt like I was dyin
sure i know people in their forties who don't seem to mind
but if it's all the same I'm staying 39

39, 39, you might see me ten years on down the line
ask me how I'm doing i'm sure i'll say fine
after all I'm only 39

they asked a hundred people I'm 39
I've broken all ten commandments I'm 39
they brought in 50 suspects I'm 39
they called 17, I'm 39
too young to fall too old to climb
there's just too many steps to take them one at a time

39, 39, you might see me ten years on down the line
ask me how I'm doing i'm sure i'll say fine
after all I'm only 39

oh I lied when I was 25
told a dying man i was 39
for in my hands i held his fate
and i was afraid that he wouldn't let me operate
and, to this day, that man is doing fine
now here I am, I'm really 39

39, 39, you might see me ten years on down the line
ask me how I'm doing i'm sure i'll say fine
after all I'm only 39

to see sea lions, pier 39
world war two, 39
Queen's 39th song, 39
now i've left 39 clues here for you to find
Jimmy Carter, 39
or Willie Parker, 39

39, 39, you might see me ten years on down the line
ask me how I'm doing i'm sure i'll say fine
after all I'm only 39

P.S. Was wondering if Loudon Wainwright III has influenced your songwriting at all? If not you should check him out I bet you'd like. Have a nice day!

percy 9-15-2009 03:30 AM
the basic riff is C and F back and forth.
Then the change goes Dm7 G C F, Dm7 G C F..CFCFCF..........

I've listened to a bunch of Loudon and liked some of it a lot, but I bet there's gems I haven't heard. What record should I check out?

matt f 9-16-2009 09:17 PM
Thanks for the speedy response. I have been listening to his 92 album 'History' a lot. It showcases his blunt heart-on-sleeve approach due to a recent loss (of his dad i think) and the dissolve of a relationship. There also a lot of fun/funny/witty moments. He also has a new project of Cahrlie Poole covers and songs inspired by the man which sounds pretty interesting. Thanks again!

i want you to read my mind
to see the trees and not be blind
don't want to leave you far behind
as i walk off on down the line

oh my world is make believe
there's angels hiding in the trees
there's demons selling apple cider
i'm raking Whitman's leaves

and all the drills are banging
and all the bells are clanging
and all the sky is hanging from a hook
it's like I'm in a painting
in a scene in a movie
being watched by somebody in a book

i've seen the world the bitter world
the sweet world the glory world
and to this day I'm still not sure
which one is right? outside my door

i've lost my way in mad meadows
i've seen love laugh on tippy-toes
in photographs i've seen repose
and the emperor without any clothes

And all through the valley
and all across the nation
and all the way to heaven on a rail
By the smell, the flowers
and by the song, the birds
and the stars on a clear night never fail

there are those that cant be still and still be
free i think i always will be
Me, i'm not what I believe
but whatever believes in me

faith is what we have in science
fate is what we have in store
of course I've read Self Reliance
the Truth it doesn't need the words

my head knows all the questions
my heart knows all the answers
but the each speaks in a different tongue
the wisdom to listen
is always old and
the strength to change is always young

mags 9-19-2009 03:00 AM

Totally new here.

Just heard this song on the radio a day ago (talk show interview), and Google ("Whitman's leaves...") helped me find my way to these fine lyrics.

But...(I'm missing something I know):
- What's the song's name?
- Are chords avail.?
- What album?
- Can I buy a copy?

Thanks!

Percy 9-28-2009 07:49 PM
Aha! Well you guessed the song title- Whitman's Leaves!

Brand new tune not recorded yet.
That radio show is the only time I've played it in public. May have to change that tonite.

when you're young you're radical by nature
when the old just leave well enough alone
Glenn Beck you inspire fear and hatred
there's nothing wrong with Van Jones

Van Jones he's a man I understand him
gave his heart to the mighty thoughts he's known
looks like we got ourselves a reader
there's nothing wrong with Van Jones

you can't be the voice of the voiceless
or seek without upsetting stones
what's to learn without a few bad choices
there's nothing wrong with Van Jones

you with the mouths of foaming anger
screeching to a halt setting the tone
in you I see a far greater danger
there's nothing wrong with Van Jones

there's plenty wrong with institutions
with corporations, armies and bad loans
with communist or capitalist revolutions
but there's nothing wrong Van Jones

I went to college in his hometown. He was already traveling and playing but still pretty local. For a little while there we hung out and during that time, according to him, I wrote the words to that song. I don't recollect it, the writing or the words. He and I have joked about it since then tho.

people on the outside
don't forget about me
locked up on the inside
don't swallow the key

people in the courtyard
footloose and fancy free
while you're eating ice cream
don't forget about me

a letter is a hanging
on the town hall wall
from the down trodden
to the ten feet tall

from up upon on my back
now you've seen it all
all i want is to stand and
all you want is not to fall

chorus
lord i don't belong here
oh it's such a waste
I've got noble ambitions
and finer tastes
i know i gotta walk there
i do not mind the pace
but i look around and I swear
so many a blank face

when you're not looking
a painting comes to life
there's people in the houses
in the town in The Starry Night

and even on the sidewalks
of an authors masterpiece
there's characters unwritten
that no one ever sees

we're on our way to heaven
but no one knows the way
so we head in a direction
and we pray

i'm standing in a long line
waiting on my meager pay
trying to strike a good conversation
as to myself I say

chorus
lord i don't belong here
oh it's such a waste
I've got noble ambitions
and finer tastes
i know i gotta walk there
i do not mind the pace
but i look around and I swear
so many a blank face

this song makes me feel a little blue. but it's so true. i like the idea of all the unseen beings who populate the artist's imagination but don't manifest on the page (or the canvas), though their spirits are felt as a shimmering, like the heat waves curling off a summer street...
and, yes, it's so that we are all muddling through, some days more than others, and sometimes we do feel blue. and, too, there are walls and keys and outsiders looking in, while those on the inside yearn to be free again... (have you sung this song anywhere yet? i'd like to know the tune...also, do you have a title for it yet?)
